Platform upgrades

Website and platform upgrades

Upgrade an ageing Drupal, WordPress, Laravel or PHP site to a supported version, so it stays secure, fast and easy to maintain.

Keep your site supported, without starting again

Quick answer: a platform upgrade moves your website or web application to a current, supported version of its CMS, framework or PHP, keeping your content, design and functionality. It’s usually quicker and cheaper than a rebuild, and it becomes essential once your version reaches end of life and stops receiving security fixes.

Every platform has a lifecycle. Drupal 7 reached end of life in January 2025, Drupal 10 follows in December 2026 (the same week Drupal 12 is scheduled for release), older PHP versions are retired by hosts, and frameworks like Laravel move on every year. Sites left behind become harder to secure, harder to host and harder to change.

AI-assisted development has made major upgrades faster and more affordable than they used to be, especially for older custom code. We’ve worked with Drupal since 2008 and WordPress since 2010, and we still regularly upgrade sites as old as Drupal 6. Whether it’s a quick version bump or a major migration, we’ll tell you what’s involved and what it’s likely to cost before we start.

Signs you need an upgrade

Is your platform overdue?

If any of these sound familiar, it's time to talk.

End of life

Your CMS, framework or PHP version no longer gets security fixes.

Hosting warnings

Your host is retiring the PHP version your site depends on.

Updates failing

Updates break things, so they've stopped being applied.

Slow and dated

Pages are slow and the editing experience feels old.

Security scares

Malware, spam or an audit has flagged the site.

Nobody knows the code

The original developer has moved on and changes feel risky.

What we upgrade

Upgrades we handle

From routine version updates to major migrations.

Drupal upgrades

Drupal sites of any age upgraded to current Drupal: Drupal 7 to Drupal 11, Drupal 8 or 9 to Drupal 11, Drupal 10 to 11, and on to Drupal 12 once it’s released (scheduled for the week of 7 December 2026). For Drupal 6 and 7 sites, content, users and files are migrated and custom modules rebuilt. Sometimes the better answer is a move to WordPress or Laravel instead; see replatforming. More about Drupal.

WordPress upgrades

Bringing neglected WordPress sites up to date: core, themes and plugins, replacing abandoned plugins and fixing whatever breaks along the way. More about WordPress.

Laravel and framework upgrades

Stepping Laravel applications through major versions and updating their dependencies, so they stay secure and keep getting new features. More about Laravel.

PHP upgrades

Making older code compatible with current PHP versions before your host switches off the old one. It’s often the trigger for a wider upgrade.

Staging and launch

We do the work on a staging copy of your site, keep your URLs where possible and redirect any that change, then launch once you’re happy.

After the upgrade

Once you’re current, our website security service keeps your site patched with regular security updates.

FAQs

Platform upgrade questions

How do I know if my website needs an upgrade?

If your CMS, framework or PHP version no longer receives security updates, it needs an upgrade. Other signs are updates that fail, hosting warnings about an old PHP version, and a site that has become slow or hard to edit. We can check your site and tell you where it stands.

Is it better to upgrade or rebuild?

If your site’s design and structure still work for you, an upgrade is usually quicker and cheaper. If the site needs a new look, new features or a different platform anyway, a rebuild or replatform often makes more sense. We’ll give you an honest recommendation either way.

What should Drupal 7 site owners do now?

Drupal 7 reached end of life in January 2025 and no longer receives official security updates. Owners can upgrade to current Drupal or move to another platform such as WordPress or Laravel. Either way it’s a significant project, so it’s worth planning sooner rather than later.

How long does a platform upgrade take?

A routine WordPress or PHP upgrade can take a few days. A major upgrade, such as Drupal 7 to current Drupal, is a full project that can take a few months, depending on how much content and custom functionality the site has.

Will an upgrade affect our search rankings?

It shouldn’t. We keep your URLs wherever possible and redirect any that change, so search engines and visitors find the new pages.

When is Drupal 12 being released?

Drupal 12 is scheduled for release in the week of 7 December 2026, and Drupal 10 reaches end of life on 9 December 2026. If you’re on Drupal 10, now is the time to plan your move to Drupal 11. Sites already on Drupal 11 can move to Drupal 12 once the modules they rely on support it.
