The Challenge
The Department of Health tendered for a supplier to create a virtual tour to showcase the new Perth Children’s Hospital and act as an induction and training tool for staff relocating to the new facility.
PCH is Western Australia’s specialist paediatric hospital and trauma centre, providing medical care to children and adolescents up to 16 years of age.
The Department of Health tendered for a supplier to create a virtual tour to showcase the new Perth Children’s Hospital and act as an induction and training tool for staff relocating to the new facility.
We explored many of the off-the-shelf virtual tour platforms for suitability to the requirement. The majority were self contained within the virtual tour, but PCH needed a more flexible approach structured more as tour within a website. We determined quickly that a bespoke solution was the only way we’d meet the need.
We chose our favourite combo for web app solutions; Laravel and VueJS and created a CMS to accommodate the virtual tour features. The hospital can be virtually explored by floor level (8 levels from B2 to level 5), services and departments (eg. ‘clinical services’ and ‘staff facilities’), or showcase facilities (eg. ‘parent accommodation’). The tour uses 360 degree panoramic photography, still photography, interactive floor maps, informative copy and hierarchal navigation.
Backed by an easy to use content management interface PCH site administrators can easily make updates to the site. More importantly staff moving from old premises to new have been able to familiarise themselves with the new hospital. The virtual tour also acts as a useful resource for patients, their friends and family, and anyone with an interest in the incredible state of the art facility.
