Itomic are pleased to announce that we’ve recently added new dedicated website hosting services in Sydney, Australia. This adds to the tally of website hosting service locations we’ve been evolving around the world since 2000. Our other hosting locations are Perth (Australia), Dallas (USA), Houston (USA).
Why have multiple servers in multiple locations? Here are a few top reasons:
- Not putting all our eggs in one basket. If all our servers were in one data centre and that data centre had a major outage (very unlikely, but never say never), then all our hosting services would be down until the fault is rectified, as opposed to just a % of them. Multiple servers in multiple locations also gives us the option to restore a backup from one server onto another server in another data centre in another city or country.
- Nearness to target markets. If yours is a very busy site and the majority of your users are US-based, then rather have your site physically located in the US (even if you are in Australia) for that little extra ‘zing’ in response time from your website. It’s great that we can offer this flexibility to our clients.
- Load balancing. If one of our servers is getting overloaded, we can move sites to a server with more spare capacity. This indeed was one of the motivating factors in commissioning the new Sydney server: our Perth server was starting to get a little ‘overheated’ with all the new sites we were adding to it (and the increasing popularity of those sites) and service levels were starting to drop below what we deemed to be acceptable.
- In support of legacy technologies. One of our servers still supports some older/ageing technologies that our newer servers have, by necessity, left behind. The cost to our clients of uggrading their sites to be compatible with the newer technologies might be prohibitive/uneconomic for some.
