Website content management just got even easier with Itomic

Itomic are now in a position to raise the bar even higher in relation to DIY website content management. We now have the technology to allow you to write your web page content in your favourite text editor (e.g. Word) and then cut and paste the whole lot, text AND graphics, straight into your website content management system.

How times have changed! In the beginning there were websites, but only skilled web programmers had the access and skills to add new pages or edit page content. Then crude content management systems (CMSs) emerged, allowing less skilled (but often nervous!) persons to attempt to manage page content via their web browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer), but strictly plain text only please! Then ‘WYSIWYG’ arrived. A little bit ‘buggy’ perhaps, but it brought a lot more familiarity to the editing process because now users could bold and italicise, etc. just like they did in Word.

Over time these WYSIWYG CMS editors got much more robust and feature-rich, including the ability to cut and paste directly from Word. Basic text formatting would be preserved, but any images (e.g. logos, photos, etc.) got left behind in the Word document. To get the images back into the document typically involved first loading up them up into a file repository on the web server via the CMS, then inserting or linking them back into the document, then fiddling a bit more to make sure they were position/aligned correctly. In other words, a fair amount of mucking around to get the desired effect. And this is more or less where most CM Systems sit today.

A few months ago one of our valued clients (thanks Deryck!) reminded us of this time consuming ‘hassle factor’ in getting images onto his website. We scoured the web for solutions, tested a few options out, and found one that works a treat. We’re now very pleased to be able to make this technology available to all Itomic clients (for a small licence fee + labour) on request.

One small word of caution: with power comes responsibility! The ‘richer’ the editing environment for your website content, the more of a challenge it presents to your appointed website editing person(s) to keep your the site looking great – as opposed to a more basic editing environment being more able to enforce stricter ‘look and feel’ consistency. Photos of varying heights and widths on a web page rarely present well!

So if you have the need to frequently update your website with images, the business benefits of cutting and pasting text and images directly from Word will be obvious.
